During the Elizabethan era (1558–1603) the persecution of witches gathered momentum. Witches were hunted and accused of being responsible for illnesses (the Bubonic plague amongst them), disasters and/or deaths. These victims were then subjected to various trials and death by hanging if found guilty. During the trials mostly women were prosecuted and subsequently convicted. For a list of those found guilty at English Witch Trials, click here. Those found guilty in the English county of Essex are in the Essex More Resources.

I looked at the list of those found guilty and felt terribly terribly sad. I am sure that many of those women, and i believe there was the odd male name listed, were either using herbs to heal people or simply victims of a neighbours envy oe jealousy, for example. It was a terrifying time and a sad example of what ignorance can make people do.
