infoplease Names and locations in this distance calculator are from the Geographic Names Information System, United States…..and BGN database of foreign geographic feature names. No attempt has been made to supplement those names with others that may be in common use. The computation is for the “great circle”[*1] distance between points, and do not account for differences in elevation.
[*1] a circle of which a segment represents the shortest distance between two points on the surface of the earth.

I wanted to know how far Newfoundland, Canada was from Grimsby Docks, Lincolnshire, UK via sea? Infoplease answered: Distance: 2383.1 miles; 3835 kilometres; 2070.9 nautical miles and also latitudes and longitudes. A long and dangerous journey for all seafarers.
