A contact of mine has discovered that he has a half-aunt who was adopted - he's just got her birth certificate. Any advice on how this can be progressed?

The first step I'd take would be to register with the relevant government adoption register/s for the country or countries likely to be involved.
Search & Post a message on as many adoptions forums as you can find.
Add the adoptee to his family tree, if he has one online, with a note saying the child was given up for adoption & that contact is invited & would be welcomed.
The above will only be successful if the adpoted person has also registered with the relevant agency or if they, their descendants, or someone acting for them, are actively searching for family connections online. But that is often the case.
Using forums that have searchable archives is an advantage because someone may be searching in the future that is not searching now.
Remember to update any online forums if the contact email address used changes over time.
Ask amongst family & family friends in case someone else has knowledge they've not disclosed.
Be patient but persistent, hope for the best & most importantly be prepared to respect whatever decision the adoptee makes regarding contact if they're found.
Very best of luck in your searching.
    Regards, Vicki

Many thanks Vicki - I'll pass that on and we can work on it.

    A DNA test might help.

DNA tests are something we're considering. Don't forget though that these folks have Yorkshire heritage :)
