For anyone lucky enough to get back to the Civil War period, there is a book on the shelves at Kew titled the Able Men of Suffolk, which is a transcribed list of the Domestic Papers of Charles 1st, taken 1638/9.

It lists all able men A-Z aged between 16-60 that are NOT already trained, it came in very useful for the one named study I have been helping with, but I do have families that are not listed in it.
