Parish registers online


Over 550,000 Herefordshire baptisms and marriages are included in the IGI at FamilySearch but some parishes are missing (you can see the coverage here).


There are very few baptism or marriage entries for Herefordshire at either at findmypast or Ancestry, but there are 355,503 burial entries from the National Burial Index at findmypast.


The volunteers of FreeREG have transcribed the registers for 5 Herefordshire parishes. There is currently no OPC project for Herefordshire.

Key Herefordshire resources


Herefordshire Record Office not only holds records for the county but also for the diocese of Hereford (which also covers South Shropshire, and parts of Worcestershire, Monmouthshire, and Powys). Diocesan records include Bishop's Transcripts (c1650-1850), Marriage Bonds and Allegations (1661-1982), Tithe Maps and Apportionments (1836-c1850) and Wills (pre-1858), all of which have been microfilmed.


The Record Office also has an extensive collection of School Logbooks and Admission Registers (there is a PDF list here), and Quarter Sessions records including lists of prisoners (1802-1971) and rolls that give details of individual cases (1697-1971).

Hereford Cathedral Archives holds the registers for the cathedral, and also for the parish of Hereford St John the Baptist. The parish of Donnington is in Gloucester diocese, and the registers are held at Gloucestershire Archives (Donnington entries prior to 1754 are in the Ledbury registers).


Herefordshire Family History Society was established in 1980 and meets in Hereford on the 3rd Friday of each month. The society has published CD ROMs with indexes of Marriages from 1538-1957, Burials from 1813-39, and an index of Monumental Inscriptions.
