    The Statistical Accounts of Scotland

There are two Statistical accounts, 1790s and 1830s. Written by the local clergyman, or similarly educated person, the accounts record life as it was happening, includes such diverse topics as poverty & wealth; social class; agriculture, fishing & industry; education and the moral fibre of the community and such like. Though not many individuals' names crop up, you get a good sense of the community to give you background to your family.

There is no cost, nor do you need to log-in in spite of the instructions. Just run your eye down to For non-subscribers and click on Browse scanned pages. Once onto the next page you fill in the name of your village or town and hope it is listed if not, you may find a nearby one with a similar geographical, occupational and cultural identity.

    Enjoy :)
