Local Register Offices

Following on from Peter's 'brick wall' item in the latest newsletter, I just wanted to add a few notes of caution about obtaining marriage certificates from local register offices, as you will not always get a certificate showing original signatures from them.

    1. Some local offices don't have a master index so will only supply marriage certificates if you can provide the exact venue.

    2. Not all local offices will provide a certificate showing an image of the original entry. Some will produce a handwritten or typed copy of the entry.

    3. Local offices can only provide a copy of the original entry if the original register has been deposited with them. How soon registers are deposited depends on how quickly they are filled. Some rural parishes are still using marriage registers started in 1837 and will not yet have deposited any with the local registrar.

Lastly, I am not sure if is still the case but at one time some busy London offices were refusing to issue historic certificates.

Good points. There are also some offices that no longer have the equipment to produce facsimiles - always check what you're going to get before ordering.
