Further to Peters mention of the Futurelearn course in the latest Newsletter, 11th April 2016.
    https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/genealogy
It am currently doing the course and would recommend it, and Futurelearn courses in general. As Peter mentions frequently, and not without reason LostCousins members are a not beginners in the art of researching their family history. But I we should never be afraid to learn new tricks.

I am also doing it. It has its good moments but also some lows. The DNA sections aren't great. The Futurelearn forum badly needs improving. But overall I would also recommend it. It is free after all. Got some great links to genealogy resources I didn't know about. Also many people have been praising Lost Cousins in the forum.

Great - that should make Red Dragon happy!

By the way, I understand that it's still possible to sign up for the course, even though it has almost finished - apparently all the information will remain online.

Mike I presume that since this course has run several times it is not being moderated as vigorously if at all by the educators or mentors. This makes the forum hard to follow and allows misconceptions to flourish. It does not have a quote option to identify the person you are addressing in the thread so quite often you will receive a reply to a comment you did not post!! On a positive note I liked the option of being able to see all the posts that I have made in a thread and to follow and unfollow other participants with one click. What did you feel needed improvement in the forum?

Search! It needs a search function.
    Yes Follow is good.

Wondered where everyone was! (me included) I find there are too many posts to read; I got stuck into week 4 early on the Monday morning so that I could read and respond before it became overwhelming. There were only 80 or so to plough through! By the end of the week it is into thousands. Some great links/resources to follow up....at some point.

It's ok,quite a few helpful tips etc. Sometimes such groups can turn into 'chat' pages. As long as a reasonable level of grammar is maintained,I will stick with it.

All of the following is taken from course material. Don't think they will mind me posting it....

    Specialist tools

This includes a right old mixture of programs and cloud based tools that can be useful to achieve specific tasks. These often become marginalised over time as the main genealogy software programs incorporate their features, as has happened with geo/mapping applications. Here are some we have found useful though there are many more:

CLOOZ - Has a document based approach to gathering data which helps with analysing information found and linking people to one another. It can generate reports in hundreds of formats.

Family Tree Analyzer- As the name suggests it helps you to analyse a family tree to look for errors and missing data. For example, “colour reports” provide a colour-coded visual oversight of whether individuals have been recorded in each census. It is freeware, but is also a work in progress.

Genelines – Works with your genealogy software to create seven different types of timeline charts with your family’s data. You can choose to include world events within the timelines.

ResearchTies - A cloud based tool allowing users to record a research objective and the sources to search in order to meet their objective. It streamlines the data entry of search results and is very helpful when compiling large amounts of data and sources. Links to online results can be created, and digital images of documents can be uploaded.
