This link will take you to the Essex Archives On-Line contact page.

I have visited the Chelmsford office and found them very helpful and friendly. It's worth contacting them in advance, if you decide to visit, as there may be quite a demand for the micro-fiche and micro film readers.

I think Chelmsford ERO also rates very highly for comfort - a beautifully airy spacious reading room and a convenient adjacent long-term car park. For those who can't get there the 'Seax' on-line service is very good - subscription for on-line access to the digitized Parish Registers is not cheap but if you have established Essex ancestors I feel it is good value.

Essex Ancestors - SEAX is great but it is expensive. I've bought the odd day or a week's access when I know I have a lot of time to research. It will be easier when the FamilySearch index for Essex is complete. So far there are about half a million entries available.
I must make time to do some more transcribing. The Essex project is taking a long time.

I thought the Annual Seax was quite reasonable as I have a lot of Essex Ancestors, it is less than the hotel bill and petrol for one overnight stay that I was doing before they came online

Well put in terms of getting to the Essex Archives it's a lot cheaper of course. I have to add a flight to England :D
But I was thinking in comparison to the cost for images (many with transcriptions) at other sites for other counties. They range from free - for the Medway CityArk and the growing collection of images on Family Search (Cornwall PRs, Durham BTs, Norfolk PRs etc etc) and the growing number of counties available at subscription sites like Ancestry and findmypast where for about twice as much as a years access to SEAX you get far more than just 2 counties worth of parish registers.
If I had as many family members in Essex as I have in Dorset, then it may be worthwhile but I so far have two branches who by the 1820s were mainly elsewhere.
