The California Digital Newspaper Collection contains over 400,000 pages of significant historical California newspapers published from 1846-1922.

It is free and works quite well. Newspaper copy is generated into searchable text using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software. Computers often have a hard time reading newspaper print, particularly for papers printed before 1900 so this isn't always a great success.

There is a nice calendar that makes it easy to find a specific issue which you can then browse through.

You can also download papers as PDFs.
