    Staffordshire Name Indexes

This website, from the Staffordshire & Stoke On Trent Archive Service, allows free access to the indexes listed below :
    • Calendars of Prisoners at Staffordshire Quarter Sessions, 1779-1880
    • Staffordshire Police Force Registers Index, 1842-1920
    • Diocese of Lichfield Wills, 1650-1750
    • Staffordshire Apprentices, 1600-1900
    • Workhouse Admissions and Discharges, 1836-1900
    • Tenants of the Manor of Newcastle under Lyme, 1700-1832
    • Parish Clerks, Diocese of Lichfield, 1691-1916
    • Stafford Gaol Photograph Albums Index, 1877-1916
    • Quarter Sessions Jurors Lists Index, 1811-1831
    • Staffordshire Police Disciplinary Index, 1857-1886
    • Canal Boat Register Index, 1795-1797
These indexes allow you to find documents held by the archive service, and then (if you wish) to order photocopies of them. One or two emails follow the initial 'order' and once the documents have been copied you can pay for them online and they are posted to you.

Note that work is ongoing on some of these indexes, for example the coverage of the Lichfield Wills index is gradually being extended. Also note that the Diocese of Lichfield covered more than just Staffordshire, taking in Derbyshire, north Shropshire and north Warwickshire. I have found the service very helpful, the wills proving to be invaluable both in piecing together the genealogy of the Atcherley family, and in throwing some light onto the lives of some of the family's members.
