I just use the New Posts button to keep track. This seems to list all the posts I haven’t looked at since I was last on the site. These posts stay on the list until I have read them. I disabled email alerts.

  2. Sorry, but you may have missed the point. I want to be advised when somebody adds a comment to a discussion I am interested in and have chosen to follow.

You may have gathered I did get the email to tell me there was a new reply to a discussion I am following yet I didn't do anything different from what I did in the other discussion I was supposedly following.

The forum is hosted on a different server rented from a different hosting company, so there won't be any correlation between how your email provider treats emails from the forum and emails from the main website.

When you look at your watched discussions you're initially shown only the discussions with unread messages - you need to click a link at the bottom to see all folllowed discussions. (This might not solve your problem but it's a useful reminder for others.)

  4. I've just got the email to say there is a new reply. So I don't think it's my provider who is at fault.
I cannot see the link at the bottom, which page can I see it on?

The page in your profile that shows your watched discussions.

  6. Now I am totally lost. All I can find is a page for unread watched discussions which tells me I don't have any. That is possibly true.

I am still baffled as to why I would have missed about 14 pages of a discussion where I had ticked the email option in a comment I made..

There are two Ancestry private public tree discussions. Maybe you had emails for the first one, but when the second discussion was started you would have to post to it or watch the new one to get notifications.

I try to keep upto date this way too.

Receiving some email alerts that doesn't necessarily mean your provider is not at fault. When I had an issue with email alerts, some arrived and some didn't, but the problem was nevertheless at my end. I verified this by temporarily changing my email address to a forwarding one which sent emails to both the email address I had been using and to another one on a completely different server.

Another quick way to check that you you should be getting alerts of new posts in a discussion is to click on New Posts at the top of the page. If there is nothing new showing, then click to view Recent Posts, and all the discussions you are watching will have a pair of spectacles just to the left of the reply column.

I have seven messages in my inbox this morning informing me of new posts. :) Two of them came in while I was reading and were follow-ups to what I had already read. (and another just popped up while I was typing this). Everyone is busy on the computer at the same time I guess.
ETA: I have five open tabs with all the different subjects. :)
